LSF meeting at Bartlett: Wednesday 8th
Februaryt 2006
Dear All,
Below is the text drafted by the London Social Forum democracy
sub-group on Wednesday 8th Feb. This is written for a submission
to the government's review on GLA powers, deadline 22nd Feb.
"The city is a culturally rich and diverse cultural
space that belongs to its inhabitants"
WSF Charter for the Right to the City
The restructuring of regional democracy in London is a constitutional
change that effects all Londoners. The London Social Forum
calls for a democratic process of public deliberation and
referendum to decide on this change, therefore reviewing the
balance of power between London citizens and their institutions.
This is an opportunity to re-think citizenship in London and
the meaning and purpose of political participation. The right
to active participation in political affairs, the planning
of the city and the social production of habitat.
The London Social Forum will be hosting an open and public
assembly to agree a process of deliberation by which this
decision can be taken democratically. This will take
place in June at City Hall or if the doors remain closed,
outside.
Democracy is possible.
